Series overview The anime adaptation was originally announced by Shueisha in the December 1999 issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump as "The Saga of Naruto", which explained the premise of Naruto as it began with the first published chapter. When the anime series aired, the title had changed to "Naruto". The series premiered in Japan on April 8, 2000, on the anime satellite television station Animax. For the first two years, the first six episodes of each half-year's release were shown. Beginning with the third season, new episodes were made to fill the remaining slots of the current episode of the anime. The Naruto anime series has been licensed by Viz Media for distribution in North America. Viz released the series in two DVD volumes in 2004, which includes an alternate cover with some content changes. The episodes included on the DVD volumes are the anime versions; the episodes of the Weekly Shōnen Jump manga are excluded. The volumes were later reprinted in 2008 and 2010. Viz also released an anime DVD collection on August 27, 2012; this included twenty-two episodes of the anime television series and the anime special. Other volumes from Animax have been licensed by Viz Media for distribution in the United States, Canada, and Australia. The English dub of the Naruto anime premiered in the United States on Cartoon Network on April 8, 2010. It ended its run on September 24, 2013. A spin-off manga series entitled The Last was released on November 18, 2004, continuing with episodes of the anime and providing the back story.
